May 6 (UPI) — Animal rescuers in India came to the rescue of a dog that wandered for more than four years with a broken stainless steel kettle stuck around his neck.

Rescuers from Animal Rahat, a PETA-supported animal protection charity, responded to a road in the northwestern Karnataka region on a report of a dog with a broken steel kettle stuck around his neck.

They were able to tranquilize the canine and take him to a clinic where the kettle was removed and the dog’s injuries from the jagged metal edges were treated.

The dog was dubbed Chala, which means “resilient” and “tenacious.” He was kept in the charity’s care while he recovered. He was then vaccinated and neutered before being returned to the area where he was found.

A local resident told the rescuers Chala had been wandering with the steel kettle stuck around his neck for at least four years.

“For more than four years, Chala suffered because of a thoughtlessly discarded item, but thanks to Animal Rahat’s compassionate rescuers, he’s finally free from pain and back in his community,” PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk said in a news release. “PETA urges everyone to help prevent this type of suffering by crushing cans before recycling them, rinsing out containers and putting lids back on, cutting apart plastic six-pack rings before discarding them, and always helping animals in need.”
