America turns 250 this week, and Washington is marking the occasion with fireworks, statues and a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that reignited one of the country’s oldest debates.
As the nation prepared for a grand Fourth of July celebration on the National Mall, President Donald Trump spent the week celebrating the birth of the republic, unveiling a new monument to Revolutionary War heroes in the shadow of the White House and pushing back hard against the Supreme Court’s decision striking down his effort to limit birthright citizenship.
The president wasn’t the only one making headlines tied to the anniversary. A nationwide competition testing what American students know about their country’s founding crowned its winners this week, and the Republican Party revealed unprecedented plans for a first-ever midterm convention timed to the run-up to November’s elections.
With the week set to conclude with a major celebration of the 250th anniversary of the U.S. on the National Mall, here are five highlights from the past week.
