Top ex-Clinton advisor sounds alarm over DSA’s socialist surge in Democrat Party

“But every Democrat and every American should recognize that the DSA represents a fundamental threat to our party and our country.”

A former Clinton administration official is warning that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) poses a growing threat to both the Democratic Party and the country as a whole as the organization seeks to expand its influence ahead of the 2028 election cycle.

Jamie Metzl, a former member of President Bill Clinton’s National Security Council, issued the warning Saturday in a post on X.

“I am a lifelong Democrat. I served on President Clinton’s National Security Council and in the State Department under Madeleine Albright. I am also a lifelong human rights and civil rights advocate,” Metzl wrote. “But every Democrat and every American should recognize that the DSA represents a fundamental threat to our party and our country.”

“This is not a story about a few idealists seeking to reduce healthcare costs. It is about a small group of radical extremists pursuing a strategy to take over the Democratic Party and ultimately our country in order to impose an agenda that would devastate our economy and fundamentally dismantle our system of government,” he continued.

Metzl pointed his followers to a recent interview between Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum and New York City DSA co-chair Gustavo Gordillo. During the interview, MacCallum questioned Gordillo about several positions supported by the organization, which include abolishing the US Senate, implementing a wealth tax, granting broad amnesty to illegal immigrants, and expanding government ownership of industry.

Gordillo responded by criticizing both capitalism and “American imperialism.” He also called the US Senate an “undemocratic institution,” and defended the idea of government-run industry over private businesses.

The DSA has signaled it intends to attempt to play a larger role in the Democratic Party’s 2028 presidential primary, with the goal of nominating a candidate backed by the organization. The effort follows a string of electoral success for DSA-backed candidates, particularly in New York. Those victories include New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, as well as Democratic primary wins by Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York’s 13th district and Claire Valdez in the state’s 7th congressional district.

Metzl is not the only prominent Democrat to express concerns about the party’s direction. Longtime left-wing political commentator Bill Maher has emphasized his willingness to vote for the Republican Party in 2028 should Democrats nominate a candidate aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America.
