Target is tightening its attendance policies by introducing a structured point system designed to track unexcused tardiness and absences among its store and warehouse employees nationwide.

The retail giant plans to roll out the new system starting in September, applying it companywide to both store and distribution center workers. Alongside the attendance changes, Target is transitioning to a single unified scheduling application for employees and managers to streamline operations.

Under the updated policy, workers will accumulate points for attendance issues: a quarter point for arriving more than eight minutes late to a shift, one full point for an unapproved absence, and three points for failing to notify a manager before missing a scheduled shift.

Progressive discipline begins with a managerial check-in at three points, moves to counseling at five points, issues a final warning at nine points, and can result in termination at 12 points. Accumulated points will expire after 365 days.

A company spokesperson emphasized that the initiative maintains Target’s adherence to all protected leave, absence, and accommodation laws.

“Target is focused on returning to growth, and elevating our guest experience is a key strategic priority,” the spokesperson told Business Insider. “We’ll continue to focus on enabling our team to deliver the delightful experience that guests depend on every day.”

This development aligns with efforts by Target’s new CEO, Michael Fiddelke, to enhance store operations and overall customer satisfaction. The company has introduced other measures recently, such as an updated dress code and a “10-4 rule” encouraging employees to greet shoppers within 10 feet and offer a personal hello within four feet.

Target is not alone in adopting such systems. Several other large retailers, including Walmart and Amazon, already employ comparable point-based attendance tracking for their workforces.

The changes come amid positive momentum for the retailer. In the most recent quarter, Target reported a 5.6% increase in comparable sales, driven largely by higher store visits as part of its ongoing turnaround strategy.
