Democrats had wanted to make former Virginia Lt. Gov Justin Fairfax into the first black governor of Virginia, but then sexual assault accusations, an attempted impeachment and a KKK photo got in the way.
It wasn’t all that long ago that Barack Obama was campaigning with Fairfax and the young politician was being hyped as the ‘next Obama”.
Now Fairfax and his wife are dead, and the former chair of Sen. Mark Warner’s campaign appears to have pulled the trigger.
Embattled former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax killed his wife and then shot himself inside their home early Thursday in the throes of a “messy divorce,” cops said.
The 47-year-old Democrat repeatedly shot his dentist wife, Cerina Fairfax, in the basement of their Annandale home just after midnight before turning the gun on himself, according to police.
The couple’s two teenage children were inside the home at the time of the murder-suicide. Their son was the one who called 911 to report the shootings, cops said.
It wasn’t exactly a happy home.
The tragic saga unfolded just months after police responded to the family’s home back in January after Fairfax falsely accused his wife of assaulting him.
Investigators later determined he’d lied after reviewing footage from multiple cameras that the wife had set up inside the home.
Fairfax’s career melted down after two women accused him of sexual assault. The case had some similarities to the recent Swalwell scandal in that it was curiously timed for after the release of former Gov. Ralph Northam’s KKK photo. There had been a push to oust Northam and replace him with Fairfax and it seemed likely that someone in the Northam camp dug up opposition research on Fairfax and leaked it, ultimately ending both their careers in disgrace.
A cautionary tale for the current rulers of Virginia about how quickly pride can take a fall.
