Look: Wolf kept as a pet escapes, gets new zoo home

May 13 (UPI) — A wolf that was apparently being kept as a pet in North Macedonia was found wandering loose on the streets of the capital and was taken to a local zoo.

The Skopje Zoo said the wolf, wearing a collar and chain, was spotted wandering loose in the Cozle neighborhood of Skopje on Tuesday.

Ministry of Interior personnel arrived on the scene, and were followed by City of Skopje employees and wildlife experts from the zoo.

The wolf was taken to the zoo, where officials said it will have a new home. It is currently under quarantine while veterinary personnel ensure it is in good health.

“Fortunately, this situation ended without consequences, as it is a tame and calm animal, but once again we appeal and remind that keeping wildlife as pets is prohibited and extremely dangerous,” the zoo said on social media. “Wolves are not pets and must not be kept in captivity and inappropriate conditions. They are wild animals that have their own natural needs, instincts and behaviors.”
