Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has issued a stark call for vengeance in his first public statement since the funeral of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed earlier this year.
The pledge comes amid heightened tensions with the United States, as President Donald Trump has placed the Iranian regime on notice with a direct threat of overwhelming military force should any assassination attempt against him succeed.
Mojtaba Khamenei declared that revenge for his father’s death and the losses suffered in the ongoing conflict with the US is a national imperative that will be fulfilled. In the statement relayed by Iran’s state-linked Fars news agency, he asserted that those responsible would face consequences regardless of his own position or that of other officials.
“Revenge is the demand of our nation and must certainly be carried out. We pledge that we will take revenge for your pure blood and the blood of all the martyrs of these two wars from the criminal and disgraced killers,” Khamenei stated. He added that the perpetrators “must know that this matter does not depend on my existence or that of other officials,” with the pledge set to be executed “soon.”
The warning follows President Trump’s extraordinary disclosure on Truth Social late Friday, in which he confirmed that 1,000 missiles are “locked and loaded” and targeted at Iran in response to persistent threats against his life. Trump detailed pre-existing orders for a devastating response that would leave key areas of Iran decimated if the regime acted on its repeated calls for his assassination.
“1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat… to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting President of the United States of America, in this case, ME!” Trump wrote. He continued that the U.S. military stands ready “to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran.”
The president’s remarks came shortly after mourners at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral in Tehran chanted slogans demanding Trump’s death. This escalation builds on a pattern of direct confrontations, including recent U.S. strikes on Iranian targets and Iranian retaliatory actions across the region.
Trump has long been a target of Iranian hostility, dating back to his 2020 authorization of the drone strike that killed Revolutionary Guard General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad.
Since then, Iranian officials have issued repeated vows of revenge, with “Kill Trump” banners appearing prominently in Tehran. The threat level has grown in the past year amid multiple disrupted plots, including the 2024 assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
In comments to the New York Post, Trump acknowledged the enduring danger: “I’ve been on their list for a long time. That’s what we’re dealing with.” He reiterated that instructions are in place for an unprecedented response if needed.
