Homeland Security Threatens ‘Prison Time’ For State Officials Not Cooperating With Trump Admin on Elections

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin issued a stark warning to state election officials, threatening potential prison time for those who fail to cooperate with the Trump administration’s efforts to secure the nation’s voting systems through the SAVE program.

Mullin made the remarks during a Friday press conference, emphasizing the need for states to participate in the administration’s initiatives aimed at bolstering election integrity ahead of upcoming midterms.

The SAVE program, which stands for Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, forms a key component of the broader SAVE America Act that President Donald Trump has actively pushed Republican lawmakers to advance.

The comments come amid heightened focus on election security following President Trump’s primetime address to the nation the previous evening. In that speech, Trump highlighted what he described as longstanding vulnerabilities in U.S. elections, drawing on materials published by his aides. Mullin reiterated these concerns, underscoring the administration’s determination to ensure robust safeguards.

When asked by a reporter from the conservative outlet Daily Caller whether the administration could guarantee secure midterm elections, Mullin responded affirmatively while placing responsibility on the states.

“First of all, great question, thank you,” Mullin began. “When we start talking about can we ensure that the midterm elections are going to be secure? Yes, we absolutely can build confidence in the American people, but the states have to do their part.”

He continued with a direct warning to non-compliant officials: “I will tell you, if the states that choose not to participate with the SAVE program and they choose not to participate in securing the elections, we will make sure that we make those states a priority to look at who voted in their states and hold them, the election officials, accountable.

If the election officials, once we gave them the information they need to secure their elections and they chose not to, then those individuals can also be held accountable by fines, by penalties, and even, depending on how far it goes, prison time.”

Mullin’s statements align with the White House’s recently published position on election integrity, which echoes the president’s assertions about compromised systems and suppressed evidence.

The administration has framed these measures as essential steps to restore public trust in the electoral process, particularly as debates continue over the SAVE America Act in Congress. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has previously indicated challenges in securing sufficient support for the legislation.
