Though paramedics rushed to the scene and attempted to revive the victim, he succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital emergency room. Specialists were also deployed to assist shocked onlookers who witnessed the event.
Store security managed to recover the weapon, described as a combat knife, and the suspect was booked into a detention center. The local homicide unit has launched an investigation to determine exactly what provoked the deadly encounter.
MDR added that both the attacker and the victim knew each other, but no motive has yet been established.
German supermarkets have been the scene of some brutal cases in recent years, including one in 2024 where a Syrian national stabbed a 4-year-old girl at random in the city of Wangen im Allgäu.
Recently, Lutz Richrath, the boss of over a dozen Rewe supermarkets in the Cologne region stated he was looking into shutting down the supermarkets in the inner-city due to the real problems related to assaults, thefts, and homelessness.
He said the “problems are really very clear —and they have only gotten worse.”
