SpaceX CEO Elon Musk warned this week that Europe faces an existential crisis because of mass unassimilated immigration and pushed back against the accusation that concerns about the issue are “far-right” or racist.
“The question is not, ‘Is America perfect?’ The question is, ‘Does Europe have a serious and growing problem?’ Absolutely, it has a serious and growing problem,” Musk said during a tense interview that aired Thursday with Zanny Minton Beddoes, who serves as editor-in-chief of The Economist, a left-leaning British outlet.
When Beddoes claimed Musk is exaggerating the scale of the crisis, he said, “I think people are asleep at the switch, and do not realize the magnitude of the issue.”

Musk has repeatedly warned that mass immigration into Europe and low native birth rates risk demographic replacement, rising crime, cultural erosion and eventual large-scale conflict. He has also used his large platform on X to highlight the U.K. grooming-gang scandals, claiming media hid that “a quarter million little girls were — still are — being systematically raped by migrant gangs in Britain,” calling the media “beneath contempt.”
Speaking with Beddoes, Musk said, “If you have a large and growing rapidly growing group of people whose beliefs are antithetical to Western beliefs, at some point there will be a reckoning.”
“They will try to implement their views, and those who oppose it will oppose it. And that’s what you call civil war. And obviously, this is the trend,” Musk continued, adding that he believes Beddoes lives “a cloistered existence” in her wealthy area of London.
Musk earlier dismissed Beddoes’ implication that his outspoken views about the dangers of mass immigration, especially in the United Kingdom, are “far-right” and “fringe,” noting that his opinion is shared by the majority of “normal people” and were considered mainstream 10 to 15 years ago.
“It’s not ‘fringe right.’ Please. It’s actually just normal people. And here are the principles, and tell me which of these sound terrible: that we should have secure borders, that we should have safe cities, that we should have sensible spending. Which of those three are far-right fringe?” Musk asked.
“I would like to just admonish you and the media for the absurd characterization of the far-right,” he added. “It is false and misleading and nonsense.”
When an apparently angered Beddoes later suggested Musk is a racist, he parried her accusation by noting that his current girlfriend, Shivon Zilis, is half-Indian, and that he has four biracial children with her.
When she asked if he is anti-Muslim, Musk said, “If people are coming to a country with antithetical views, I am against that. I am against rape and murder. I’m against the imposition of rules and laws that are contrary to what we’ve come to accept in the West. And I think it’s a crying shame that the sort of traditional media, like you, don’t recognize this.”
Beddoes later claimed to Musk that many people “loathe” him, to which he replied: “That’s probably true. I don’t care. But the fact that, as you pointed out, a quarter-billion people follow me [on X], is that I think a lot more people actually like me than don’t,” he said. “And I think a lot more people hate you and the media more than you realize.”
According to the last census in 2021, there were 3.9 million Muslims in the U.K., or 6.5% of the population, marking a sharp rise of approximately 44% from the 2.7 million Muslims in 2011. In 1960, there were only 105,000 Muslims in the U.K.
According to a Policy Exchange report published in 2016, 53% of the Muslims in the U.K. a decade ago were not born there, and 93% had parents who were born outside the country. Pew Research estimates that based on moderate immigration, 17% of the U.K. population will be Muslim by 2050.
