An illegal immigrant residing on Long Island has been arrested after butchering two women in separate attacks before allegedly turning himself in to police and confessing that he “killed somebody.”

22-year-old Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera, an El Salvador national who entered the US as an unaccompanied minor in 2016, fatally stabbed a 42-year-old female coworker outside a Wendy’s in Long Beach around 12:30 am on Friday. According to CBS News, the victim was identified as Ana Maria de Aguila Cordova, a Long Beach mother of two who was taking out the trash when she was attacked.

Just hours earlier, Rivera also attacked his 32-year-old roommate, murdering her in their apartment. He went to the job after the killing and targeted the second victim. Both victims suffered multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso, according to police.

After the attacks, Rivera allegedly contacted police and confessed. He was later arrested outside a 7-Eleven following the call. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the killings and noted that Rivera had no prior arrests or known gang affiliations.

“While we were at the [Wendy’s] scene, we received information that an individual was stopped at 169 Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook,” said Detective Lt. George Darienzo, according to the New York Post. “He asked to see police and when police arrived, he said he killed somebody that night.”

During a press briefing, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman blamed federal immigration policies for the killings.

“Why are we letting an unaccompanied minor into our country to run around, basically without any supervision whatsoever?” Blakeman said. “And then that individual grows up and automatically gets legal status in our country. This is a policy today that resulted in two women getting killed.
