April 14 (UPI) — A Maryland man said a locally-won $1 million lottery prize inspired him to buy a ticket from the same location — and he won $500,000.

The Anne Arundel County man told Maryland Lottery officials he and his wife arrived at the Walmart in Severn last month and he remembered the store had recently sold a scratch-off ticket that scored a $1 million prize.

The couple decided to try their own luck at the lottery vending machine.

“I had $40 in my purse so we decided to each pick out a $20 scratch ticket,” the man’s wife said.

The wife’s ticket was a non-winner, but the man’s Gifts of Green scratch-off scored a $500,000 windfall.

“I looked at him and he was just staring at the ticket. Then he handed it to me with the weirdest look on his face,” the wife said.

The couple said it took them about 30 minutes before they felt calm enough to drive home.
