June 15 (UPI) — A Virginia man won $100 from a lottery ticket and used $5 of his winnings to buy a scratch-off ticket that earned him a $100,000 prize.

Stuarts Draft resident William Jackson told Virginia Lottery officials he scored $100 from a ticket at the Food Lion store on Stuarts Draft Highway and decided to use his winnings on groceries.

He had $5 left over after shopping, so he stopped at the lottery vending machine and bought a Cash Wheel scratch-off ticket.

Jackson scratched the ticket off before leaving the store and was shocked to reveal a $100,000 top prize.

“This can’t be right,” he recalled thinking.

Jackson said it was a long night before he could claim his prize the next day.

“I only got two hours of sleep last night,” he said.

Jackson said the prize money serves as an early anniversary gift, as he and his wife will celebrate 50 years of marriage later in the summer.
