According to a report from The Athletic, Major League Baseball has formally warned several San Francisco Giants pitchers after they wrote Bible verse references on their caps during the team’s Pride Night celebration.
The incident occurred during Friday night’s game at Oracle Park, where the Giants faced the Chicago Cubs. Players wore special caps featuring a rainbow-colored team logo as part of the Pride Night event. Multiple pitchers, including starter Landen Roupp, chose to inscribe personal expressions of faith on their headwear.
Roupp wrote “Gen 9:12-16” on his cap, a reference to the biblical account of God’s covenant with Noah. After the game, he explained his decision to reporters.
“It’s just about God’s covenant and a promise that he makes to us that, you know, his faithfulness and his mercy,” Roupp said. “That’s just kind of something I believe in, and I stand firm in that, and I’m thankful we live in a country where, you know, we have the freedom to believe what we want … and express what we want.”
He added, “There’s no hate at all. It’s just what I stand for, and what I stand in. I believe in God.”
Relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker also appeared with Bible verses on their caps. MLB’s chief communications officer, Pat Courtney, addressed the matter directly.
“The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations,” Courtney stated.
Giants manager Tony Vitello indicated that the team had not specifically addressed the inscriptions with the players beforehand. He emphasized the organization’s broader commitment to embracing the community while noting players’ personal freedoms.
