Aug. 10 (UPI) — A Texas family’s pet goose is being hailed as a hero for alerting the sleeping family to a fire that erupted in their barn.
Fort Bend County resident Bert Gerber said he was asleep in front of the TV last week when he was roused by the honking of the family’s pet goose, Goosey.
The family’s home security cameras recorded as Goosey let out several loud honks while flames erupted in the barn behind the home.
“I just casually came outside and I saw a fire billowing out of there,” Gerber told KHOU-TV. “I grabbed a water hose and ran over there.”
Gerber was able to extinguish the flames and the animals inside the barn were able to escape unharmed.
Gerber and his wife, Chelsea, said the incident could have turned tragic if not for Goosey’s vigilance.
“We are still in complete shock over how differently this could have ended,” Chelsea Gerber wrote on social media. “We are beyond grateful everyone is safe, and we couldn’t be more proud of Goosey. He truly is our little hero.”
Goosey came to live with the family in May at the urging of the Gerbers’ young daughter, Elaine.
“When we got him, he was so small and he was just so fluffy,” Elaine Gerber said. “When I got to pet his head, he would just rest his head on my arm and it just made me tear up.”
