Dec. 10 (UPI) — Firefighters in South Carolina came to the rescue of a kitten that darted out into the road in front of a vehicle and ended up jumping up to hide in the undercarriage.
The Bluffton Township Fire Department said on social media that a driver on Bluffton Parkway saw a kitten run out in front of his vehicle and pulled over to see if he had struck the animal.
“They searched everywhere but couldn’t find the kitten. Just as they started to drive again, they heard faint meowing coming from underneath the vehicle,” the post said.
The driver and his son drove to Fire Station 30 on Burnt Church Road, where the on-duty crew jumped in to assist.
Tyler Williams, a senior mechanic with the department’s maintenance shop, went underneath the vehicle and was able to locate the kitten’s hiding spot.
Williams “carefully worked with his tools to free her. After about ten minutes of patient, steady work, the tiny stowaway was safely rescued,” the post said.
The kitten, dubbed Flash by rescuers, was taken to the Beaufort County Animal Shelter, where she was said to be recovering from her ordeal and putting on weight. The kitten will soon be available for fostering or adoption.
