July 20 (UPI) — Firefighters and animal control officers in Kentucky coordinated to rescue a dog that found a tunnel and wound up trapped 4 feet underground.
Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control said on social media that officers were called to a Featherston Drive home on Saturday when a dachshund named Veeta ventured into a tunnel she found in her owner’s yard.
“Years of erosion, natural limestone, and the root system of a nearby silver maple tree had created a maze-like cave beneath the yard, leaving Veeta about four feet underground and nearly ten feet from where she entered,” the post said.
The Lexington Fire Department was summoned to the scene to help dig.
“Firefighters, Animal Control officers and neighbors spent hours carefully digging through the heat, working inch by inch to reach Veeta safely,” the post said. “After five long hours, she was finally freed — covered in dirt, frightened, but thankfully uninjured.”
Veeta was returned to her owners, “and the tail wags that followed were nonstop.”
