Over 24 hours of non-stop eruptions have sent the Antigua region into the highest alert.

Guatemala sits on top of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, and frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activity.

With the intensifying eruption of Fuego (Fire) volcano, emergency services upgraded the orange alert to a red one, the highest warning.

Euronews reported:

“Hundreds of people living on the slopes of Guatemala’s Fuego volcano evacuated their homes throughout Tuesday after a huge eruption spewed lava and plumes of ash.

Emergency services issued a red alert, the most severe warning, after Central America’s most active volcano erupted on Monday morning, with conditions intensifying by nightfall.”

“Rivers of lava streamed down the 3,763-metre volcano located less than 100 kilometers from Guatemala City, while ash rose some six kilometers into the sky.

[…] Firefighters said they transported at least 500 residents of the El Porvenir and Las Lajitas villages to the eastward San Juan Alotenango municipality.”

Watch: volcanic lighting.

While the Fuego activity seems to be subsiding, authorities keep a close watch, to prevent tragedies like in 2018, when 215 people were killed and a similar number left missing.

CNN reported:

“The days-long eruption of Guatemala’s Fuego volcano, which has forced the evacuation of hundreds of people from nearby towns, is reducing in intensity but still remains dangerous, authorities said Wednesday.

Even though volcanic activity is showing a “progressive reduction,” accumulated material at the top of the volcano is still collapsing, which could generate more pyroclastic flows, Guatemala’s disaster agency Conred said. Forecasted rain could also cause lahars, the technical term for fast-moving mudflows, the agency added.

The Fuego volcano, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of the capital Guatemala City, has been spewing lava and plumes of ash since Monday. It has prompted the evacuation of at least 1,699 people, say officials, as pyroclastic flows roll down the volcano’s surrounding ravines.”
