Yesterday, I joined fellow Shillman Journalism Fellow Josh Hammer on his Newsweek podcast to discuss the David Horowitz Freedom Center’s pamphlet, ‘SOMALIMERICA’: The Rise of Somali Fraud, Crime and Terror in America.
While most people are focused on the current wave of Somali fraud, I told Josh that the fraud had been there all along, with the earliest period of Somali mass migration, where fake family reunification (and not just by Rep. Ilhan Omar and her relatives, real or imagined) was so common that it had to be paused for DNA testing, and our involvement in Somalia and the Battle of Mogadishu.
Local authorities had known about the current Somali health care and welfare fraud going back to at least 2008-2015 and did nothing or offered a light slap on the wrist, barring two Somali billers from billing the state for a whole two years. (One of those billers is now a senator in Somalia, but he still votes in elections in Minnesota.)
There’s lots more on both Josh Hammer’s podcast and in ‘SOMALIMERICA’: The Rise of Somali Fraud, Crime and Terror in America.
