Tesla is pushing out a navigation data update to vehicles across North America. The new map data package brings updated street layouts, revised speed limits, and points of interest across the continent.
Tesla owner @Tesla_PNW highlighted the sudden arrival of the new map package on X, writing:
“Got a software update notification and thought it was probably [FSD] 14.3.7 but no, it’s a massive navigation update as I am currently on version NA-2025.44.”
The new map package jumps from version NA-2025.44 straight to NA-2026.26. Since Tesla uses a year.week versioning format for its update packages, this new release brings map data that’s nearly a year newer than the previous version.
How Navigation Data Updates Work
Unlike standard software updates, map releases don’t send a pop-up alert to your phone or vehicle touchscreen when they’re available to download. Instead, the vehicle silently pulls map files in the background whenever it connects to Wi-Fi. You’ll still see a download icon for the package, along with a progress bar under Controls > Software.

While the download progress appears under Software, there is no notification when new maps are downloaded or installed, so they often go completely unnoticed.

Because navigation map packages (including 2026.26) are several gigabytes in size, you’ll need to be connected to Wi-Fi, as the vehicle won’t download map data over cellular. If your home garage lacks adequate wireless coverage, you can connect to Wi-Fi at a local Tesla Service Center, select Supercharger locations, or use a mobile hotspot.
Map updates roll out gradually, meaning not every driver gets access to the download on day one. Furthermore, Navigation Data packages differ from visual map tiles. Visual satellite imagery and map tiles download on demand, whereas underlying road geometry, lane routing, and speed limit databases download in these large, semi-annual regional updates.
Why Keeping Maps Up to Date Matters
Since day one, Tesla has favored its own custom Linux-based operating system for vehicle software rather than relying on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (however, Tesla appears to be working on CarPlay integration). Tesla instead develops its solutions for a great cabin experience, including navigation and maps. This includes the proprietary Maps app, which relies on Google Maps data globally and Baidu data in China but is also fed by Tesla’s own data.
Keeping navigation files updated is also essential for driver assistance features. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) depends on onboard speed limit databases.
While there’s no fixed schedule for map releases, updates typically land about twice per year. Connect your vehicle to Wi-Fi to make sure you receive NA-2026.26 as soon as it becomes available for your vehicle.
