Samsung says Galaxy Z Fold 8 crease is less visible thanks to ‘Flex Titanium’ display – 9to5Google

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 series will get a new foldable display architecture, Samsung admits, which will improve the phone’s resistance to developing an unsightly crease down the inner display.

An announcement from Samsung details something the company is calling its “Flex Titanium” display panel. It will be used in Samsung’s “next-generation Galaxy foldable devices,” which refer to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

Flex Titanium is supposed to offer a better viewing experience, according to Samsung. That comes with better durability and “reduced crease visibility.” It uses a titanium-alloy film under the OLED panel. That makes it less flexible than plastic with a significantly thinner profile. Samsung claims it measures less than 30% the thickness of a human hair.

That film is paired with a titanium plate that acts as the display’s support. With fewer air gaps in this structure, there’s more support when the device unfolds and folds back again.

Titanium-alloy film: Sits below the OLED panel, offering 20 times greater mechanical stiffness than plastic films while measuring less than 30% the thickness of a human hair, enabling a slimmer display panel.

Titanium plate: Supports the display module from beneath, eliminating air gaps between the module and adhesive for more stable support when unfolded, while retaining the flexibility needed for repeated folding.

We’ve already seen a leaked video of what the device will reportedly look like, and the display crease on what’s supposed to be the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra looks nearly invisible. That’s after several folds and unfolds done during the video.

The announcement didn’t come with any claim to boost the fold cycle rating of the devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 came with a lifespan of 500,000 folds using some of these plastic parts as opposed to titanium. It should be interesting to see what the display lifespan of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series looks like.

The two devices have been detailed to a healthy extent in various leaks. Leaks that note specs like a bigger battery, faster 45W wired charging, 20W wireless charging, and a more expensive price tag.

All of that goes out the window when Samsung makes the official announcement on July 22. Samsung has already begun its reserve campaign for a $30 credit and up to $1,230 in savings. It’s also giving away a bunch of $500 gift cards.
