President Trump said law enforcement was investigating alleged vandalism at the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Now the case has taken a very strange turn.
U.S. Park Police reportedly arrested David Hearn, a 67-year-old former U.S. Olympic canoeist, near the pool on a misdemeanor allegation tied to destruction of government property.
Hearn denies vandalizing the site.
The Washington Examiner reported that U.S. Park Police arrested Hearn after the Reflecting Pool became the center of a national fight over algae, peeling blue material, and alleged vandalism at the newly renovated site.
The report identified Hearn as a former Olympian and said the allegation involved destruction of government property, a misdemeanor tied to the same monument President Trump had just flagged publicly.
The Examiner also placed the arrest in the larger controversy over the pool renovation, including the new blue surface, visible peeling, and federal workers trying to clean up the water.
That context matters because President Trump had already accused vandals of trying to damage the surface and said law enforcement was actively working the case.
The first widely shared video from the scene came from journalist Emily Miller, who posted footage of the arrest encounter and alleged that a man had been cutting out blue sealant.

The New York Post reported that Hearn competed in three Summer Olympics as a canoeist and was cycling past the monument when he says he stopped near the Reflecting Pool.
According to that report, Hearn said he noticed a piece of the pool liner already floating or detached in the water and reached in to touch it.
Hearn’s version is that he did not destroy, break, peel, or remove anything from the pool, and that he was taken into custody before he understood what was happening.
The Post reported that Hearn was detained for nearly five hours at a U.S. Park Police facility at Hains Point and that it was unclear at the time whether formal charges would move forward.
The Washington Post’s X account also reported the arrest and noted Hearn’s denial.

President Trump’s public warning was specific: he said vandals had been trying to hurt the pool’s newly installed interior surface and that law enforcement was investigating.
He also tied the pool damage to recent damage on the National Mall grass and said repairs were already underway.
That is why this arrest matters.
The vandalism claim is no longer just a political fight over algae, paint, and a renovation.
That investigation now has a name attached to it, but the allegation still has to be handled through the legal process.
Hearn is accused, not convicted.
The strange part is the contrast: President Trump described a deliberate attack on a freshly repaired national landmark, while the man reportedly arrested says he only touched material that was already loose.
Either way, the Reflecting Pool story is no longer only about algae and peeling blue material.
It is now an arrest story.
