Lithuania’s political landscape is in flux, as a reshuffle in the government saw the Social Democrats oust the populist Nemunas Dawn party from the coalition government, due to their leader’s antisemitism conviction.
And the new coalition is reportedly already working to secure a long-term presence of U.S. military units in the NATO country, which borders both Russia and Belarus.

“Parliamentary leaders of Lithuania’s Social Democratic Party, the center-left Democrats for Lithuania and the conservative Farmers and Christian Families Union have agreed to form the country’s 21st government, local media reported on Thursday.
The coalition agreement reached by the three parties creates a 75-seat majority in parliament and paves the way for a government led by Social Democratic leader Mindaugas Sinkevicius, according to Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT.
On defense, the parties vowed to ensure Lithuania’s defense resilience and improve collective defense capabilities, civil protection, and cyber resilience.”

As Mindaugas Sinkevicius replaces Inga Ruginiene as the head of government, to get US troops stationed into the country will be a priority, as their coalition agreement spells very clearly.
Reuters reported:
“The coalition agreement said Lithuania, a strong critic of Russia’s war in Ukraine, will ‘seek a long-term and uninterrupted presence of U.S. military units in Lithuania, recognizing the U.S. presence as the deterrence priority’.
Lithuania has been left without an armored U.S. battalion of about 1,000 troops this summer for the first time since 2020, and the future presence of U.S. troops is under review by Washington, the Baltic country’s defense minister has said.
[…] Lithuania’s coalition agreement binds the government to strengthen air defenses, support Ukraine and its integration into the EU and NATO, and to keep spending at least 5% of gross domestic product on defense, among the highest in the alliance.”
