March 30 (UPI) — An Ohio store clerk’s mistake paid off for a customer whose erroneous lottery ticket turned out to be a $158,585 winner.

The Lake County man told Ohio Lottery officials he stopped March 14 at the Chestnut Food Mart in Painesville and asked for some EZPLAY Quick Spot tickets.

The man asked for five $1 tickets and one $5 ticket, but the clerk mistakenly handed him a $10 Quick Spot ticket instead.

The man decided to keep the ticket, and discovered when he checked the ticket later that he had matched all 10 numbers, earning the $158,585 jackpot.

“The ticket mix-up really worked out in his favor, because he won the entire $158,585 because a $10 Quick Spot win pays 100% of the jackpot,” the Ohio Lottery explained. “If he had purchased the $1 and $5 tickets as intended, he would have only won 10% or 50% of the jackpot respectively.”

The winner said his prize money will go toward paying bills, investing and taking care of his grandsons.
