A long-rumored new entry in Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros series could arrive as early as next year, according to a reputable insider.
Ever since Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai came out of retirement, fans have been eagerly awaiting news on a new Smash title, only to be left in the dark.
Rumors first began swirling after Sakurai, who used his brief retirement to start a game development YouTube channel, said he “can’t really imagine a Super Smash Bros title without me,” and indicated the game was so important to Nintendo that they’d surely make another one.
Following this, Sakurai returned to game development and released his “passion project” in Kirby Air Riders.
Sakurai has been quiet ever since. But according to Reece ‘Kiwi Talkz’ Reilly, he’s been working on a new Smash title, and it could release much sooner than you think.

In a post on X, Kiwi Talkz, who is known for his YouTube game dev interviews, claimed that Nintendo and Rockstar have a big few years planned with several high-profile projects coming.
“These are my four favorite game franchises of all time, and it’s great that I know all four IPs have stuff coming either soon or in a year or two,” he said. “GTA 6 in November, another Metroid game on the near horizon, Smash Bros in the next year or two, and another Zelda game and the movie in 2027.”

When pushed about whether he definitely had information about the projects, he simply replied “of course” with a happy face emoji.
In a follow-up post, the YouTuber noted that there are many possibilities for what a 2027 or 2028 Smash could look like, such as Smash Ultimate Switch 2 edition or a version of Melee or Brawl on NSO.
Previously, Kiwi Talkz had claimed that Sakurai agreed to return to do another Smash game on the condition that Nintendo let him make Kirby Air Riders first.
“Maybe Bandai Namco could be doing pre-production on it, but unlikely. Sakurai is so instrumental to planning these out (especially on the third party negotiations.) The level of respect and clout he has in the industry can’t be underestimated,” he said back in June 2025.
NintendoFans are anxiously awaiting news on the next Smash game.
Not much is known about the next Smash game yet and which fighters will be returning. Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s roster notably brought back every single character from previous installments, along with waves of new fighters such as FF7’s Sephiroth, Tekken’s Kazuya, Steve from Minecraft, and ending with the reveal of Kingdom Hearts’ Sora.
Whether this next entry will be a “deluxe” edition of Ultimate or a complete series overhaul remains to be seen.
