The suspect is in custody after six people were stabbed shortly after 7 pm inside one of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs.
Multiple people were injured Sunday evening after a stabbing attack inside New York City’s Penn Station, prompting a major emergency response. The suspect is in custody.
Authorities said six people were stabbed during the incident, which unfolded shortly after 7 pm inside one of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs. First responders rushed victims to area hospitals, with reports indicating that at least one victim suffered serious injuries while others were listed in moderate to minor condition.
According to The New York Post, Amtrak police responded to the scene and quickly apprehended the alleged attacker. Officials have not yet publicly identified the suspect, though reports indicated investigators were examining whether the individual may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.
Images and videos shared on social media showed a heavy police presence throughout the station and officers restraining a suspect on the ground as commuters evacuated the area.
One Penn Station worker told local media that employees were instructed to begin shutting down portions of the station as the situation unfolded. “I got calls to start closing the station,” the worker said. “It was real bloody, there was a lot of blood on the floor.” The worker said he observed two injured men, including one who appeared to have suffered significant head injuries and another who appeared to have a wound near his neck.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the incident in a statement posted to X. “My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery.”
He added, “I’m grateful to the Amtrak Police Department and the first responders who acted quickly to apprehend the suspect and provide emergency care.”
Officials said train operations were not disrupted by the attack, and investigators remained at the scene Sunday night as they worked to determine a motive and piece together the sequence of events.
The incident occurred less than a day before President Donald Trump is expected to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at nearby Madison Square Garden, located directly above Penn Station, to watch the New York Knicks take on the San Antonio Spurs.
