According to a report from the Milwaukee Business Journal, Microsoft has completed construction on its first data center facility in the Village of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, with the site now fully operational.

The milestone, announced by the technology giant on June 23, 2026, marks a significant step in its major investment in Southeast Wisconsin. Originally announced in May 2024 with a $3.3 billion commitment, the project—known as Fairwater—came online ahead of schedule after equipment activation and startup activities began in April.

The facility is described as home to the world’s most powerful supercomputer, designed to power the next generation of artificial intelligence innovation. Nearly 10,000 construction workers contributed to the development over the past two years, and the site currently employs nearly 550 full-time workers, with hiring ongoing and numbers expected to increase.

“With our Fairwater datacenter now fully operational, Wisconsin is now home to the world’s most powerful supercomputer,” said Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft. “This campus will help power the next generation of AI innovation globally and provide long-term economic opportunity locally through hundreds of highly skilled jobs and continued investment in the region.”

Village President David DeGroot highlighted the broader community impact. “This is a historic milestone for Mount Pleasant and all of Racine County as we become home to one of the most advanced technology campuses in the world,” he said. “Microsoft’s decision to invest here elevates our community into a destination for innovation and advancement.”

Microsoft estimates it will have invested $4.7 billion locally on hyperscale construction in Wisconsin between 2024 and 2028. The company has purchased directly from 29 businesses across 11 counties, supporting suppliers in areas like construction, steel fabrication, electrical equipment, and machinery manufacturing.

Construction on a second adjacent facility is already underway, with foundation work, steel erection, and utility installation in progress. That project is slated for completion in 2028, at which point full-time employment at the Mount Pleasant campus is projected to reach around 800, with further growth anticipated from northern expansions.

This operational launch positions Southeast Wisconsin as an emerging hub for AI infrastructure, building on earlier expansions and approvals for additional data centers in the area. Microsoft continues to collaborate with local and state partners to ensure shared economic benefits as the campus evolves.
