Look: What ‘sounded like a dog’ in Conn. storm drain was a baby raccoon

June 16 (UPI) — Animal control officers and firefighters in Connecticut responded to a call about an animal trapped in a storm drain and wound up rescuing a baby raccoon.

Middletown Animal Control said on social media that officers responded to “a call regarding an animal in a storm drain that sounded like a dog.”

The officers arrived to see what “looked like possibly a rat covered in mud and water.”

Middletown firefighters were summoned for assistance and lifted the drain cover so the animal could be fished out with a net.

“It turned out to be an infant raccoon. The poor thing was freezing cold and a mess. We rushed her to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator where she got a warm bath and lots of care,” the post said.

Officials said they are hoping to return the raccoon to the wild once it is old enough to fend for itself.
