July 30 (UPI) — Animal control officers and state police responded to a New Jersey road where about 15 pigs were reported running loose and “creating a hazard for motorists.”
The Wantage Township Animal Shelter said on social media that Wantage Animal Control officers responded alongside New Jersey State Police when the pigs were reported on Route 565 in Frankford Township about 8:38 a.m. Wednesday.
The reponders worked to guide the pigs back to a nearby property, and the owner of the animals soon arrived on the scene to assist.
“We understand that livestock can occasionally get loose, and our priority is protecting both the safety of our residents and the well-being of the animals. We’re happy to report that all of these piggies are safely back home,” the shelter said.
Officials included a reminder about road safety during emergency incidents.
“As a reminder, we live in Sussex County, where encounters like this can happen,” they wrote. “If you see emergency responders working to contain animals or manage any roadside incident, please slow down, stay alert, and keep your attention on the road. While it may be tempting to take photos or videos, using your phone while driving creates an unnecessary risk for everyone involved.”
