Japan issues megaquake warning that could follow Monday’s 7.5 earthquake

On the evening of December 8, 2025, a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake rocked northern Japan, striking off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at around 11:15 PM local time.

Centered approximately 50 miles offshore in the Pacific Ocean near Honshu’s northernmost region, the quake sent shockwaves through coastal communities, prompting immediate tsunami warnings and evacuations.

The Japan Meteorological Agency initially pegged the quake at magnitude 7.6 before revising it downward to 7.5. Waves up to 3 meters were feared along the northeastern coastline, but the actual tsunami measured just 70 cm at Kuji Port in neighboring Iwate Prefecture, with smaller surges of 50 cm elsewhere.

Authorities quickly downgraded the alert to an advisory, advising residents to avoid shorelines and river mouths without mandating full evacuations.

Damage assessments revealed no major structural collapses, but the human toll included at least 23 injuries, one serious. Most stemmed from falling debris—shattered glasses, bowls, and household items tumbling during the intense shaking.

In Hachinohe, several hotel guests were hurt, while a driver in the Tohoku region suffered minor wounds after his vehicle plunged into a road crater. Local shop owner Nobuo Yamada captured the terror, saying, “I’ve never experienced such a big shaking.”

Panic gripped the area as residents rushed to higher ground, clogging roads and sparking minor accidents. Satoshi Kato, vice principal of a Hachinohe high school serving as an evacuation center, described the chaos: at home when the quake hit, he watched shelves empty and dishes crash, then navigated jammed streets to prepare the site—though few had arrived yet.

Nuclear sites, including the Rokkasho fuel reprocessing plant in Aomori, passed initial safety checks despite a minor spill of about 118 gallons of water. No radiation leaks were reported, easing fears in a nation still scarred by past disasters.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi swiftly mobilized an emergency task force and took to social media with a message of solidarity: “Heartfelt condolences to those who were injured.” She urged ongoing vigilance, furniture securing, and rapid evacuations for any aftershocks, emphasizing preparedness for the week ahead.

Experts warned of escalating risks. The Japan Meteorological Agency highlighted a slight chance of a magnitude 8 quake and further tsunamis from Chiba Prefecture to Hokkaido, issuing alerts for 182 municipalities.

“There is a possibility that further powerful and stronger earthquakes could occur over the next several days,” one official cautioned.

Japan’s position on the volatile Ring of Fire—where it endures a tremor every five minutes and claims 20% of global quakes over magnitude 6—underscored the event’s gravity. Social media flooded with resident videos of swaying buildings and rattling fixtures, while the yen dipped briefly against major currencies before stabilizing.
