Yesterday, after the contentious interview President Donald Trump gave to Meet the Press’s Kirsten Welker, Democrat Illinois House Speaker Emanuel Chris Welch posted on X complaining about the president’s supposed mistreatment of black women and journalists.
“This interview hurt my soul,” he wrote. “The mistreatment of black women and journalists by this President is downright embarrassing and unacceptable. Kristin Welker is neither crooked nor stupid. She is a history-making journalist who has earned the right to be respected. The President should apologize immediately.”
Welch’s post was met with criticism, with conservative commentator Jeffrey Mead commenting.
“This is so stupid,” he said. “Why are you injecting race into this?”
“Trump talks to people of all races and genders equally aggressively. Stop trying to make things that aren’t about race about race.”

Trump’s Sunday interview with NBC journalist Kirsten Welker largely centered around the issue of Iran but ended abruptly after he cut the interview short following a particularly heated exchange on election fraud. Trump insisted that the fact that California, almost a week after its primary elections, is still counting ballots is a sign that elections in the United States are broken.
“Do you think it’s appropriate that they have an election and five days later, they’re nowhere close to picking a winner?” he asked Welker.
“State and local officials acknowledge they are slow,” she responded. “They’re urging the votes to be counted quickly. That’s how they vote in California.”
The interview ended with Trump saying he was done and calling NBC a one-sided, crooked network.
“Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough,” he said. “Thank you, darling. Have a good time.”
NBC has been rated by AllSides, an independent news aggregator, as leaning left and appealing largely to Democrats in its coverage.
