Israeli security officials are growing increasingly concerned after at least 28 drones successfully entered the Gaza Strip in recent months, despite repeated interception attempts. The development raises fears that Hamas terrorists could deploy the aircraft for surveillance of Israeli forces and future attacks.
Army Radio reported that the drones infiltrated Gaza through various routes, including from Egypt and even from inside Israel itself. Defense officials assess that most of these drones likely fell into Hamas hands, though the precise nature of any cargo they carried remains unclear.
Even without additional supplies, the drones represent a significant operational asset on their own. Hamas has already demonstrated a growing reliance on such technology to monitor troop movements and conduct strikes by fitting explosives to the platforms.
The figures paint a troubling picture of persistent smuggling efforts. Since January, Israeli authorities have thwarted 89 drone smuggling attempts.
When combined with the 28 confirmed entries, this brings the total of known operations to at least 117 in the first half of the year alone. Officials caution that these numbers reflect only detected cases, suggesting the actual scale of smuggling could be substantially higher. Some drones may have slipped through entirely undetected.
“The IDF claims that all smuggling attempts intercepted so far contained drugs only,” Army Radio reported. “However, as noted, dozens were not intercepted, and these figures represent only the cases known to the military.”
In response, Israeli authorities have intensified crackdowns on smuggling networks. In June, police and the Defense Ministry seized properties connected to the operations, while Defense Minister Israel Katz imposed economic sanctions on those involved.
“Anyone who smuggles weapons, equipment, or funds to terrorist organizations in Gaza is part of the terrorist network itself and will pay a heavy price,” Katz said in a statement.
The worries come amid a broader evolution in modern warfare, where militant groups are rapidly adapting commercial drones for combat.
Hamas is reportedly examining Hezbollah’s tactics in Lebanon, where explosive drone attacks have killed 16 Israeli soldiers and wounded many others in recent months. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir addressed the escalating threat in May, acknowledging the difficulties posed by advanced first-person-view drone capabilities.
“The drone threat is a challenge, but we will overcome it,” Zamir said. “The battlefield is unpredictable and always will be, but we are dedicating the IDF’s best resources, minds, and capabilities to this issue.”
