A 23-year-old gunman opened fire inside ChristianaCare’s Wilmington Hospital in Delaware on Tuesday afternoon, killing one hospital employee and injuring another before fleeing the scene.

Wilmington police responded to reports of an active shooter shortly after 3:30 p.m. Tactical teams, along with paramedics, firefighters, state police, and federal agents, swiftly converged on the facility. Employees were evacuated with hands raised as law enforcement surrounded the building and conducted a floor-by-floor search.

Authorities located the two victims in the building’s basement area around 5 p.m. One employee later succumbed to their injuries, while the condition of the second remains unclear, Police Chief Wilfredo Campos confirmed during a news conference. The suspect, whose identity is known to police but has not been publicly released, was arrested in Philadelphia several hours later. Charges are pending, along with extradition back to Delaware.

Police indicated the shooting appears to be work-related, with sources suggesting the alleged shooter may have been a temporary employee at the hospital. The incident unfolded moments after approximately 20 staff members had completed an active shooter training session on the lower level.

One hospital employee who fled the emergency room described hearing two gunshots. “There’s still people in there that can’t get out because they got them on lockdown… they’re probably terrified,” the worker told NBC Philadelphia. “This is supposed to be a place for people to feel safe.”

Former patient Kathleen Decker recounted seeing police rush in as she prepared to leave. “So it was pretty evident that something was happening… And then all the police cars, ambulances came up here and I thought ‘Oh, it’s a shooter.’”

The hospital campus was placed on lockdown, with the emergency department diverted, before being lifted later in the evening. Wilmington Mayor John Carney addressed the tragedy at the news conference, stating, “This afternoon, we experienced a senseless act of violence in our city.” He praised first responders while acknowledging the difficult day for the community.
