Publix Super Markets has issued a recall for a specific lot of its GreenWise Organic IQF frozen blueberries following confirmation of 12 E. coli cases tied to the product.

The recall, announced on July 3, 2026, by the product’s producer, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile, targets a single batch of the popular 10-ounce packages sold exclusively at Publix stores. Authorities identified the contamination as E. coli O145:H28, a Shiga toxin-producing strain capable of causing significant health issues.

The affected product carries lot code 60401 and a Best By date of February 9, 2028. It was distributed across Publix locations in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. While the formal recall focuses on this specific lot, Publix is taking a broader precautionary step.

“Publix is advising customers to return or discard any frozen GreenWise blueberries products with a purchase date of 7/3/2026 or before,” the company stated in its announcement.

This expanded guidance urges shoppers to err on the side of caution with any recently purchased GreenWise frozen blueberries, even if the lot code does not match the recalled batch.

Health officials linked the blueberries to illnesses reported between May 11 and June 5, 2026. Those infected experienced symptoms including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea—which may be bloody—and vomiting.

While most healthy individuals recover within a week, vulnerable groups such as young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious complication.

Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. initiated the voluntary recall after learning that consumers who reported digestive illnesses had consumed the GreenWise frozen blueberries.

The company is cooperating with regulatory authorities and conducting a full investigation into the source of the contamination. No other lot codes or Best By dates are impacted.

Publix has emphasized that consumers should not eat the recalled blueberries. Affected packages should be thrown away immediately or returned to the store for a full refund. The grocer continues to prioritize food safety across its operations.
