Two men have been accused of murdering an off-duty firefighter in Florida and then gloating about it as they stole his iPhone as well as his Nike sneakers, a witness to the alleged crime has said.
Torrey Holston, 26, and Jose Garcia Romero, 27, are standing trial for the murder of Coral Springs-Parkland firefighter Christopher Randazzo, 39. The brutal killing took place in front of a Lauderdale-by-the-Sea resort when Randazzo was leaving his second job as a bartender on October 19, 2019.
In the trial, witness Cheyenne Papach took to the stand and said that the pair of accused killers did not show any remorse for the crimes and claimed that they proudly gloated over the killing of the fireman, per Local 10.
Papach was in a relationship with Marco Rico, who is also linked to the case and pleaded guilty in 2020 to conspiracy as well as accessory after the fact, and said that she was there the night of the gruesome murder. She said that while she and her then-boyfriend were having sex, Holston, as well as Garcia Romero, went and robbed the off-duty fireman. “I know Jose and Torrey were walking the streets while Marco and I were on the beach,” she told the court.
After meeting up with the two later on in the car, the pair allegedly said that they had robbed someone of his shoes and iPhone. However, when Holston took out the phone to show Papach, it was locked. The witnesses recounted that Holston told the whole group to go back to where they had robbed Randazzo to get the password to the phone.
When they got to the scene of the robbery, Randazzo was on the ground and was not fully conscious. Holston and Garcia Robero then berated him for the password. Papach then claimed that Holston fired his gun, killing the off-duty fireman. “I think I got him,” Holston allegedly said, per Law and Crime.
Papach said in her court testimony that Holston, who was armed with a handgun, was bragging about the murder and said, “I can’t believe I caught a body” while he smiled about the actions. Garcia Romero was also allegedly pleased with the crime. Holston allegedly called the gun his “military weapon” and said to Garcia Romero, “We can rob him, and we can shoot him.”
In court, prosecutors said that Randazzo was found without his sneakers, lying face down, and stripped of his iPhone, wallet, and car keys.
Both men have been charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a deadly weapon, and criminal conspiracy. They face life in prison without parole if they are convicted.
