The FBI has opened a sweeping investigation into more than 350 subjects connected to the violent online network known as “764,” a loosely organized group accused of coercing minors and other vulnerable individuals into acts of violence, self-harm, and sexual exploitation, according to federal authorities.
According to Fox News, Officials say the 764 network preys on victims through popular social media platforms, messaging apps, and online gaming communities. Members allegedly befriend targets online and slowly manipulate them into increasingly disturbing behavior.
Once victims are psychologically controlled, they are pressured into producing child sexual abuse material, harming animals, cutting themselves, or attempting suicide.
In some cases, perpetrators reportedly watched these acts through livestreams or demanded proof in the form of images and videos.
The FBI has taken steps to address the growing threat by training agents across all of its field offices to recognize and investigate these types of violent online networks.
Authorities are also coordinating with international law enforcement agencies, acknowledging that the network operates across borders and often involves suspects outside the United States.
Earlier this year, federal prosecutors announced the arrests and charges of two individuals believed to be key leaders within the 764 network. One suspect, a U.S. citizen living in Greece, and another from North Carolina are accused of running an international child exploitation enterprise.
If convicted, both could face life sentences. Federal officials described the alleged operation as one of the most extreme and disturbing online exploitation cases encountered to date.
