The arrest of a migrant following immigration court proceedings at the federal building in downtown Seattle on Tuesday generated outrage, as left-wing activists alleged that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents targeted an innocent “asylum seeker” for deportation.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told The Post Millennial that Carlos Vasquez Garcia, the apprehended migrant, is an illegal alien from Mexico who unlawfully entered the US under the Biden administration in 2024. DHS signaled that Garcia has a criminal history in his home country. Sources familiar with the matter exclusively told TPM that it’s allegedly Cartel-related, describing Garcia as a “very dangerous man.”
Further information could not be shared as the investigation remains ongoing. Video footage posted on social media shows a large group of ICE agents taking Garcia into custody outside the courtroom.
“On April 7, ICE arrested Carlos Vasquez Garcia, an illegal alien from Mexico. He illegally entered the United States on March 19, 2024, and was RELEASED into our country under the Biden administration. Garcia will remain in ICE custody pending the outcome of his removal proceedings,” a DHS spokesperson told TPM in a statement.
“We are confident he is one of the media’s ‘non-criminals’ because of his history in his home country,” the spokesperson continued. “Nearly 70 percent of ICE arrests are of criminal illegal aliens who have been convicted or have pending charges. This statistic doesn’t account for those wanted for violent crimes in their home country or another country, INTERPOL notices, human rights abusers, gang members, terrorists, etc. The list goes on.”
ICE arrests at immigration courts will continue, according to DHS.
“It is common sense to take them into custody following the completion of their removal proceedings. Nothing prohibits arresting a lawbreaker where you find them,” the agency said.
Last year, the federal building in downtown Seattle, which hosts immigration court hearings, came under siege by anti-ICE protesters, including members of Antifa, after ICE began making targeted arrests following court proceedings. Demonstrators used electric scooters/”Lime” bikes, as well as other objects and debris, to barricade all of the garage door exits, trapping ICE officials inside the building and preventing them from leaving with detained migrants.
The siege lasted for several days, and the “Lime” bikes became a symbol of anti-ICE direct action among Seattle Antifa groups.
Following Garcia’s arrest, demonstrators vandalized the building with anti-ICE messaging and vowed to recreate the barricades if ICE continues making apprehensions at the federal building, according to social media posts. The building houses Seattle Immigration Court and the ICE Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA), a DHS legal field office that offers legal counsel and services for immigration removal hearings, as well as assisting with investigations for ICE enforcement.
