How Samsung Achieved a Crease-Free Screen on the Z Fold 8
If you look closely at the angled photo of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra above, you’ll see a small crease running up the middle of the screen. That was the only angle PCMag’s Eric Zeman could get the crease to appear. If he tilted the phone in any other direction, it vanished, leaving a clean, flat panel. Samsung worked hard to minimize that crease and improve the screen’s overall performance. Here’s what it did.

After a first look at Google I/O in May, Samsung today offered more details on the smart glasses it built with Qualcomm and Google. The company says these Android XR specs can get 9 hours on a charge, and more than 7x with the case. It says they’d be useful for summarizing meeting notes on a whiteboard, asking for the next step in a recipe, or making a hands-free video call. Expect them this fall with collections from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

Full-Fledged Gemini Intelligence for New Foldables
The Galaxy Z Flip 8, Fold 8, and Fold 8 Ultra will get a much more full-fledged version of Gemini Intelligence, with the ability to execute multi-app workflows, than the limited version shipped with Android 17. It will expand support “from a handful of apps to more than 40 popular apps,” including Etsy and Expedia. Pixel devices will see this update “later this summer.”
Meanwhile, Google’s Gemini Notebook will come preinstalled on Samsung’s new foldable phones, offering an expanded, two-pane interface that lets you drag web pages, YouTube clips, and other content from the right pane to a notebook outline on the left.

Galaxy Ultra 2: Big Battery Upgrade
The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 has a massive 800mAh battery, up from 590mAh on the original Ultra, which should keep it going for 60 hours per charge. There’s also increased durability for water sports; its EN13319 rating means it’s suitable for scuba diving, putting it more in line with the Apple Watch Ultra series. The Ultra 2’s 1.52-inch screen is slightly bigger than the 1.5-inch display on the original, and it offers 5,000 nits of brightness compared with 3,000 nits on its predecessor. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is $699.99 and comes in a 47mm size in Titanium Silver or Titanium Gray. Preorder it now ahead of an Aug. 7 launch.

Z Fold 8 Phones: The Biggest Battery Upgrade in Years
Though it’s a lightweight 201g, the Z Fold 8 has room for a larger 4,800mAh battery, up from 4,400mAh on the Z Fold 7. Samsung says this should support a “full day of work.” (Our Fold 7 battery tests got 13 hours and 10 minutes.) The Z Fold Ultra 8 has a 5,000mAh battery, while the Z Flip 8 has a 4,300mAh one.
Samsung is touting silicon-carbon technology in its batteries, which can pack more energy-carrying ions into the same space than lithium-ion batteries.
The Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra support up to 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging, up from 20W and 5W, respectively, on the Z Fold 7. The Z Flip 8 has 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. In 30 minutes, the Z Fold 8 Ultra can reach a 67% charge, the Z Fold 8 can get to 63%, and the Z Flip 8 can get a 55% boost.

Z Fold 8’s Fresh Design Comes With Unexpected Trade-Offs
Samsung’s foldable lineup gets a makeover this year with two new tiers. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 is now shorter and wider, while the familiar TV remote-style device moves to the premium tier as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. At 201 grams, the Z Fold 8 is Samsung’s lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet. For comparison, the Z Fold 7 comes in at 215g, while the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is a hefty 258g (it lost points in our review for being a “seriously heavy phone.”) The Z Fold 8 is just 4.55 inches tall but unfolds into a 7.6-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. For more, check out what PCMag’s Kimberly Gedeon had to say about it.

I Didn’t Quite Flip For the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8
As its name suggests, the Z Flip 8 is a flip phone-style smartphone. PCMag’s Eric Zeman tried it out and found that the Z Flip 8 includes all the “expected spec bumps” packed into a thinner and lighter phone that Samsung says is easier and “more joyful” to use.

Hands On With Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra
Samsung’s latest flagship folding phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, may be an iterative update to last year’s winning Z Fold 7 formula, but it still manages to impress. PCMag’s Eric Zeman got some hands-on time with the new foldable ahead of Unpacked; here are his first impressions.

Galaxy Watch 9 Is Giving Me Déjà Vu, and I’m Concerned
PCMag’s Andrew Gebhart got a first look at Samsung’s latest smartwatches, and he’s not quite sold on the Galaxy Watch 9. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, however, offers significant upgrades, including a diving certification, a much bigger battery, and a way brighter screen than the original.

Galaxy Unpacked 2026: What We Expect
Rumors about the Fold and Flip 8 lineup have been making the rounds for months. The Z Fold 8 Ultra will supposedly have the same display specs as the older model: a 6.5-inch cover screen and an 8-inch inner display. Both should also have a less-visible crease thanks to a new titanium substrate. And both should have the same chip found in the S26 Ultra, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, as well as faster wired charging up to 45W. Here’s everything else PCMag’s Kimberly Gedeon expects to see today.

Samsung Teases ‘Flex Titanium’ Screen Tech
Ahead of today’s Unpacked, we got a look at what Samsung is calling its Flex Titanium technology, which will deliver a more durable folding screen with a less visible crease that can use significantly less electricity, Samsung says. Phones with Flex Titanium will feature two layers of the display: a titanium-alloy film, a third as thick as a human hair, nestled below the OLED panel; and a flexible titanium plate that Samsung says will bond with the display without leaving any air gaps.

5 Updates That Would Make Samsung’s Foldables Flawless
Samsung will have to step it up if it wants to maintain market leadership in the face of a rumored Apple foldable, and it may have a chance if it could just cross off a few items from my Unpacked wishlist.

Experience
I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag’s news coverage.
Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I’ve covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that’s now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
