Police in New York City are investigating another device discovered on the Upper East Side on Sunday, just a day after an improvised explosive device was thrown during a protest outside Gracie Mansion.
Authorities said the device was located inside a vehicle parked on East End Avenue between 81st Street and 82nd Street. Officers quickly secured the area as the situation unfolded.
“NYPD officers have frozen the area around the vehicle and are conducting limited evacuations of buildings in the vicinity while the Bomb Squad assesses and removes the device,” the New York City Police Department said in a statement posted to social media Sunday afternoon.
Bomb Squad units and dozens of police officers were seen in the cordoned-off area around 4:30 pm while authorities assessed the device.
Police restricted access to the immediate blocks as a precaution while the investigation continued.
The discovery came less than 24 hours after a device was ignited and thrown near Gracie Mansion during demonstrations on Saturday. According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the earlier device was confirmed to be a real explosive.
“It is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb. It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device,” the commissioner wrote on social media.
Two suspects, identified by police as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi of Pennsylvania, were arrested at the scene Saturday and remain in custody in connection with the incident. Authorities said six people in total were arrested during the protest outside the residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
New York officials said the investigation into the earlier explosive device is being conducted with federal authorities. Kathy Hochul said the New York State Police are assisting the NYPD through the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
“There is no place for violence of any kind in our State and those responsible for this cowardly act will be held accountable,” Hochul said on X.
