“Congratulations to the Great Jay Clayton on his confirmation by the United States Senate.”
Jay Clayon has been confirmed by the Senate in a vote of 51 to 47 after being nominated to the position by President Donald Trump. Clayton, who served as the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission during the first Trump administration, was congratulated by Trump after he was confirmed to the role on Tuesday.
“Congratulations to the Great Jay Clayton on his confirmation by the United States Senate, to be the next Director of National Intelligence. Jay is outstanding in every way, and will do a spectacular job as Director!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Clayton will replace former DNI Tulsi Gabbard after she stepped down from the role when her husband was diagnosed with rare form of bone cancer. Gabbard’s role was temporarily filled by acting DNI and Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte, who worked to slashed staff from the ODNI during his brief tenure with multiple rounds of layoffs.
Pulte’s interim appointment had prompted Democrats in the Senate to demand a replacement over fears that he would dismantle the agency. Despite this, the vote was along party lines, with only GOP senators voting to confirm him to the position and Democrats claiming a politicized process.
“As Senate Republicans move to once again confirm an inexperienced and unqualified nominee to a position of massive national security consequence for years to come, one thing remains clear — this type of politicized leadership will only make Americans less safe,” Democrat Senator Adam Schiff said in a statement about Clayton’s confirmation.
FBI Director Kash Patel, who will be working with Clayton, said in a post to X, “Congrats to Jay Clayton on confirmation – outstanding pick from President Trump to lead ODNI.”
