UPDATE 1PM BST: A previous version of this article erroneously suggested the leaker had “full access” to the GTA 6 game, based on the declaration of what appears to be an impersonating social media account.
CyberLeek – the group responsible – stated that impersonator accounts are appearing but it only operates the Telegram account and website, which has been taken down.
“Some impersonators using the username CyberLeek have appeared across various social media platforms, including X, Discord, and here on Telegram,” the group wrote in a post on Telegram.
“As a reminder, we only operate an official website and this Telegram channel, which was created as a precautionary measure.”
Eurogamer apologises for the error.
ORIGINAL STORY 12.30PM BST: Rockstar appears to be struggling to contain Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay video leaks for a second day. Worse, the leaker responsible, CyberLeeks, has posted new gameplay footage featuring the word “leek” being written on a wall in bullet holes, suggesting access to a playable version of the game.
Three GTA 6 videos leaked yesterday, and a fourth appeared earlier today, showing a biplane flying above a major city – presumably Vice City – showcasing just how large and detailed the playing area appears to be. Towering office blocks stretch up into the sky as highways bend and curve in spirals around them, and small dot-like cars drive along them. The radio is playing on the plane, which flies with no particular urgency or destination.
The video ends with the game’s co-protagonist Jason shooting a rifle at a wall and leaving bullet holes in it that spell – as mentioned – the word “leek”, suggesting a link between whoever recorded the footage and CyberLeek – or that the leaker themselves is the one apparently playing the game in the footage.
It’s still unconfirmed whether these videos are real, and if they are, how current they are. It’s unlikely they come from the GTA 6 ‘extended look’ trailer that’s due to air on Netflix next week, given their raw and unedited nature, as if recorded by someone messing around in the game – and the inclusion of the word “leek” now all but confirms this. We also have no idea how long the apparent leaks will continue for..
The motivation behind the leaks is purportedly backlash for GTA 6 not coming on a game-disc, and for Rockstar offering what seems to be a substantial amount of exclusive in-game content to people buying the more expensive Ultimate Edition of the game. But the leaker is also profiting in crypto from these leaks via an associated and incentivised donation drive.
This monetary angle has resulted in fierce condemnation from consumer rights movements like Stop Killing Games, which has urged followers not to support “illegal” acts such as this. “Do not send these people your money, no matter how much sympathy you may feel for their actions,” Stop Killing Games said.
