Golden State Valkyries forward Gabby Williams has weighed in on the ongoing debate over biological males competing in women’s sports after declaring that she would gladly welcome a transgender athlete as a teammate or opponent in the WNBA.
In comments made to reporters this week, the All-Star and French Olympian stated, “I would welcome a trans athlete on my team or against my team any time. I don’t think it’s a problem in the world. It’s just another way to kind of attack trans people.”
Williams framed opposition to males in female categories as the “new battle,” claiming that “trans people’s rights [are] being stripped away from them” and praising former WNBA player Layshia Clarendon, who identifies as “nonbinary.”

The remarks come in response to Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham sparking a firestorm by telling ESPN she wants to protect young girls from having to compete against biological men in sports and locker rooms.
Cunningham’s defense of sex-based categories drew strong support from fans concerned about fairness and safety, while also triggering backlash from activists and some within the league.
Williams is now one of the most prominent active WNBA players to explicitly endorse the inclusion of males who identify as women.
Social media erupted with criticism, with many fans accusing her of undermining the very league built for female athletes and calling for boycotts.

Others pointed out that her position is a betrayal of women who trained their entire lives for opportunities that biological males could easily dominate due to their natural physical advantages.

“He Cheated,” a website documenting men in women’s sports, responded:
“Notice she didn’t say she’d welcome a male athlete taking her place on the team.
Does she understands that in order for that ‘trans athlete’ to have a ‘place’ on her team or an opposing team, that means an actual woman must be excluded?
I’d like her to say this directly to the woman who loses her WNBA roster spot to a man who began pretending to be a woman two years ago and was previously playing in a men’s amateur weekend league.”
