August’s PS Plus Essential update has been revealed, and the games themselves are just around the corner — but are you actually happy with what’s on offer? As always, that’s what I’m here to find out.

This month’s headliner has to be Dying Light 2. While Techland’s gritty sequel didn’t get off to a flying start back in 2022 — it was met with only decent reviews and the player reaction was similarly lukewarm — it’s been massively improved over the years thanks to loads of post-launch support.

At this point I’d say it’s well worth checking out if you’re a fan of sandbox gameplay, crunchy first-person combat, zombies, or all of the above.

Next up is Big Walk, which is releasing straight onto Sony’s subscription service. This is a co-op game where you’re tasked with trekking across a huge open world, solving puzzles and probably getting into arguments with your mates along the way.

The footage I’ve seen up until now has looked quite promising. Assuming you can get a handful of friends together for a session or two, it should be a good laugh.

And last but not least, we’ve got Signalis. A deeply moody, fantastically atmospheric sci-fi horror jaunt. It got great reviews around its initial release in 2022, and since then, it’s gone on to become a bit of a cult hit.

But what do you think of August’s lineup? Good? Bad? Just completely and utterly okay? Vote in our polls, and then reveal your thoughts in the comments section below.

Robert Ramsey

Robert (or Rob if you’re lazy) is an assistant editor of Push Square, and has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he’s played ’em all. A little too much, some might say.
