The memory crisis pretty much means that laptop manufacturers are shifting back to 8GB RAM configurations, but if you’re running Windows 11 and want a decent experience, having 16GB soldered or installed is the bare minimum. Thankfully, Microsoft has finally realized that AI has changed the computing landscape and has promised to make its latest operating system more memory efficient, bringing a sigh of relief to the masses.
On Microsoft’s website, the President of Windows and Devices, Pavan Davuluri, has provided confirmation related to the company’s commitment to making the Windows 11 experience significantly better. Memory optimization was likely one of the biggest complaints from users, and looking at how AI customers have gobbled up a major chunk of the RAM supply, consumers only have the liberty to upgrade to 8GB RAM laptops within an acceptable budget.
Sure, users who know their way around Windows 11 can resort to disabling various apps and programs on startup, not to mention stopping a multitude of services from unnecessarily consuming valuable system resources, but the root of the problem can only be addressed by Microsoft. The software aims to rectify this by addressing how much memory the operating system can choose to utilize before you’ve opened up anything.

Additionally, Microsoft has mentioned below that it will continue tuning its WinUI 3 so that apps tailored to it will consume less RAM. The company also intends to bring increased efficiency to Chromium and WebView2 components, enabling systems with 8GB RAM to be used more comfortably.
“Alongside all of these areas, we’ve steadily been introducing several improvements to the memory efficiency of Windows, from taking advantage of a more efficient memory allocator to reduce overhead across apps and components, continued tuning of WinUI 3 so that apps built on it use less memory by design, as well as driving efficiencies across Chromium and WebView2 components when they appear in the operating system.”
We’ve previously reported that shortly after the MacBook Neo launch, Windows 11 competitors were adamant about targeting the affordable notebook sector, with one of the machine’s closest rivals being Dell’s new XPS 13. Unfortunately, with its 8GB RAM count, the Windows 11 laptop was utilizing 70 percent memory, all without opening a single window or program, showing that Microsoft has a ton of ground to cover.
Hopefully, Microsoft delivers on its promise, because with the memory shortage persisting until 2028, we’ll have to accept that 8GB RAM configurations are the new 16GB ones, and until demand and supply stabilize, we’re just going to have to get used to it.
