Sales Data Paints a Very Grim Picture for Physical PS5 Games in the USA – Push Square

Just 7 PS5 games sell over 100k boxed copies

PlayStation Games Push Square

According to new sales data from Circana director Mat Piscatella, only seven PS5 games have sold more than 100,000 physical copies in 2026.

In the week that ended 11th July 2026, just two PS5 titles managed to sell over 10,000 physical units during that seven-day timespan.

The two new statistics are eye-opening and highlight how poorly physical game sales are doing in the USA. They arrive as Sony announces plans to halt the production of PlayStation discs from January 2028, and provide further context as to why the company has made its decision and — at least so far — doesn’t appear to be interested in backing down from it.

That is despite a very intense social media campaign from PlayStation fans that has seen all its posts bombarded with criticism and attacks — and now indie developers are getting caught in the crossfire.

Piscatella does not confirm what PS5 games have sold more than the stated 100,000 physical units, but you have to imagine some of them are the biggest releases of 2026 so far — the likes of Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, and 007 First Light.

Sales of video games have shifted more and more in favour of the digital model, leaving physical boxes behind to create as much as an 85% swing in favour of the PS Store and other digital storefronts. When it made the announcement, Sony said it was ditching discs “to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

A huge backlash has followed in the weeks since, but today’s new sales data gives more context to the decision — the things simply aren’t being bought enough to justify continued production for Sony. That sucks for the hardcore who value the disc and the occasional manual, but only seven PS5 games this year have shifted more than 100,000 units.

Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he’s found playing the latest and greatest PS5 games as well as supporting Derby County. That last detail is his downfall.
