President Donald Trump has formally notified Congress that the United States is once again at war with Iran. The notification, delivered in a letter dated July 10, resets a 60-day window under which the administration can conduct military operations in the region without additional congressional approval.

In the letter obtained by the news outlet, Trump described the strikes that commenced on July 7 as “military action consistent with my responsibility to protect Americans and United States’ interests both at home and abroad.” This move comes amid escalating tensions centered on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint where naval confrontations between the two nations have intensified.

The conflict has followed a turbulent pattern of ceasefires and renewed hostilities. Trump recently declared an end to a fragile two-month truce with Iran that originated in April.

Although the administration had previously maintained that full-scale war had not resumed despite sporadic attacks, U.S. Central Command reported that American forces conducted strikes on more than 300 Iranian military targets over the past week in response to Tehran’s actions threatening shipping in the strait.

On Monday, additional U.S. strikes targeted Iranian positions. A CENTCOM statement explained the operations were carried out “at the Commander in Chief’s direction,” adding: “These strikes will continue imposing a heavy cost on Iranian forces and degrade their ability to attack innocent civilians and commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Trump has also announced plans to reimpose a blockade on the strait, asserting U.S. control over the waterway and intending to charge vessels for passage. This escalation follows earlier efforts to de-escalate.

In May, Trump had informed lawmakers that an earlier phase of the war, which began in February, had “terminated,” pausing the war powers timeline. The subsequent ceasefire was extended indefinitely, with the White House arguing it halted the legal clock—though critics on Capitol Hill disputed this interpretation, citing ongoing naval operations.

The latest notification arrives as congressional opposition to the conflict grows. Last month, the Senate passed a measure on a 50-48 vote to end hostilities unless explicitly authorized by Congress, with four Republicans joining Democrats. A similar vote succeeded in the House, 215-208. However, these concurrent resolutions carry limited legal force and would likely encounter a presidential veto if pursued further.

In his letter to Congress, Trump emphasized continued readiness, writing that U.S. military forces “remain postured to take further action, as necessary and appropriate, to address further threats and attacks upon the United States or its allies and partners and to ensure the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran ceases being a threat to the United States and to our allies and partners.”
