July 7 (UPI) — Marine researchers in Rhode Island captured video of what might be the first great white shark ever caught on camera in the state’s waters.
The Atlantic Shark Institute said on social media that Executive Director Jon Dodd and Sarah Callan, manager of animal rescue for the Mystic Aquarium, were out on the water recently attempting to locate a humpback whale carcass spotted off the coast.
The duo searched an area of nearly 50 square miles before locating the carcass a few miles off the coast of Block Island.
“As luck would have it, this great white was found feeding on it,” the post said. “At about 8 feet in length it was healthy, well fed and had the whale to itself while we visited!”
The post said the encounter “just might be a first in [Rhode Island] waters.”
