Global ocean surface temperatures hit a new record in June, intensifying concerns about the accelerating impacts of climate change and the potential for more extreme weather events in the months ahead.
European scientists monitoring Earth’s climate systems reported the alarming milestone on Wednesday, as data from two independent services confirmed that sea surface temperatures outside polar regions surpassed previous peaks for the time of year. The findings underscore the planet’s ongoing warming trend driven largely by human activity.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service and the Copernicus Marine Service, both part of the European Union’s Copernicus earth observation program, announced that they had independently verified the record temperatures. Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, described the development as potentially signaling a shift into more extreme conditions.
“With ocean temperatures at these levels and El Niño on the horizon, we are likely to see more temperature records fall in the coming months,” Buontempo said in a statement. He cautioned that the world could be heading into “uncharted territory.”
On June 21, the Copernicus Climate Change Service recorded global ocean temperatures at 20.86 degrees Celsius (69.54 degrees Fahrenheit), exceeding the previous highs of 20.83 degrees Celsius (69.49 degrees Fahrenheit) seen in both 2023 and 2024 for the same period. The Copernicus Marine Service reported a slightly higher figure of 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 degrees Fahrenheit), beating prior records by 0.1 degree Celsius.
Experts link the persistent rise to long-term planetary warming. Richard Allan, a professor of climate science at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, explained the underlying mechanism in a phone interview.
“It’s consistent with what we’ve known for a long time — that the planet is warming because we’re emitting vast quantities of greenhouse gasses, primarily from fossil fuel burning, into the atmosphere and that’s stifling the ability of the planet to lose its heat to space,” Allan said.
Oceans absorb more than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped on Earth due to greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas. Scientists note that the emerging influence of El Niño, a natural climate pattern that warms the central and eastern tropical Pacific, may further amplify these effects.
Pierre-Yves Le Traon, scientific director of Mercator Ocean International in Toulouse, France, which operates the Copernicus Marine Service, emphasized the urgency of monitoring and response. “It’s really worrying to see this trend,” he said, calling for continued adaptation measures alongside reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
The ocean temperature announcement arrives amid widespread extreme heat across multiple continents. In the United States, more than 46 million people were under extreme heat alerts as of Wednesday, with dangerous conditions forecast to intensify across the central and eastern regions ahead of the July Fourth holiday weekend. Temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s, with some areas exceeding 100 degrees, are expected in parts of the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, according to the National Weather Service.
Europe has also faced severe heat, with record-breaking temperatures last week contributing to excess deaths. The World Health Organization reported more than 1,300 heat-linked deaths across the continent since June 21, while French authorities noted around 1,000 additional deaths than expected during the peak of their recent heat wave.
