Vice President JD Vance has postponed his scheduled trip to Switzerland for talks with Iran, which was originally scheduled for Friday.

Originally, an official signing ceremony for the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran was scheduled for Friday in Switzerland.

The memorandum declared a 60-day ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as talks continue for a final deal to end the war. Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons, and the US plans to provide sanctions relief based on Iran’s performance in meeting its commitments.

Trump signed the 14-point agreement on Wednesday while having dinner at the Palace of Versailles with European leaders. Vance and the Iranians also signed the deal electronically.

“As the Vice President said at his press conference, the plans for the upcoming technical talks have not been finalized, and the U.S. delegation has been prepared to depart at the first available opportunity. But the logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable,” A White House spokesperson said in a statement.

“As of now the Vice President is not departing tonight. We will let you know as soon as we have a concrete update about next steps. We look forward to beginning technical talks as soon as possible.”

“Our plan is to go to Switzerland. I don’t know exactly when,” Vance told reporters during a White House press briefing on Thursday. “The way that we’re setting up this technical negotiation is that obviously you’re going to have the political leadership involved. We’re going to have people on the ground actually driving the technical talks, the nuclear talks.”

He continued, “We think these technical negotiations are going to start sometime this weekend. That’s still the plan, but that could change because it’s not an easy country, Iran, to get out of. And so, we’re trying to figure out exactly when that’s going to happen.”

As The Gateway Pundit reported, Vance delivered a press briefing earlier, during which he took questions about Trump’s memorandum of understanding and addressed criticisms of the agreement.

Vance contrasted the deal with Obama’s 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal, noting that the key difference between Obama’s deal and Trump’s framework for a future deal lies in the negotiating standpoints of Iran and the United States: one where Iran was previously in control, versus now where the US holds the cards over Iran.

“It’s a fundamentally different perspective,” Vance said. “I think the most important differences are where we’re coming at it from a position of strength and the fact that our Gulf Coast partners love this deal.”
