According to a report from ABC7 News, stress along the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults in Southern California has climbed to its highest point in a millennium.
New research from the University of Hawaii at Manoa highlights the elevated tectonic pressures building in one of the most densely populated and infrastructure-heavy regions of the United States.
The findings come from a physics-based model that incorporated 1,000 years of regional earthquake history to simulate stress accumulation, particularly around the critical Cajon Pass area.
Lead scientist Liliane Burkhard noted the potential scale of future events, stating that “the region may be capable of a large through-going rupture involving both fault systems.”
She added that researchers “also found that Cajon Pass may act as an ‘earthquake gate,’ sometimes blocking large ruptures from crossing between the faults, and sometimes allowing them to pass through and involve both systems in a single event.”
The study reveals that stress levels, which are typically relieved during major earthquakes, have continued to intensify. More than 160 years have passed since the last significant rupture, placing the fault system in what Burkhard described as “a critically loaded state.”
A simultaneous rupture involving both faults could have severe consequences for major population centers, including Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, and the Coachella Valley.
The San Andreas Fault, the primary boundary between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates, stretches approximately 650 miles and interacts with a network of related faults across the state.
